All too often, people who have a mental illness are reluctant to seek help. As a result, many such people become involved in the criminal justice system. Fortunately, our society and the legal system have started to realize that punishment is not an effective way to prevent future involvement in the system. The legislature and the courts have instituted programs to help people whose mental illness was a contributing factor to their involvement in the criminal justice system. I have extensive experience representing those who have a mental illness, substance use issues or both and as a result have become involved in the criminal justice system.
